Assault Cube is one of the only multiplayer first person shooter games available for the PC that is actually completely free to use. It’s based on the very popular CUBE engine which has been designed with a few key factors in mind which we’ll talk about a bit later on but it does mean that anyone should be able to play this without any problems at all. If you enjoy playing games, this is one that you really don’t want to miss.
Assault Cube was originally created back in 2004 by a few members of one small community who took a small game engine and wanted to turn it into something that played really well. It wasn’t called this at first, though – it’s original name was ActionCube until it was changed later on. At the time, more and more people wanted to get involved with making their own games and this was something that started to gain a lot of interest. However, because of the massive size of the game, it took a long time before anything was actually released to the public – a full two years in fact. In 2006, it was launched on its website and people were able to download it and play it as they wished. There is one thing about this game which really separates it from the vast majority of others that there are to choose from at the moment.
Most video games these days are developed by major corporations who want to try and make as much money as they can from the products they create. This is a concept which is the same all around the world in business and so shouldn’t come as a shock to you. For this reason, they keep the source code of their projects hidden so that competitors aren’t able to take a look inside of it and copy any of the ideas. This is understandable, but it doesn’t help developers who want to learn how it works and possibly even work on it themselves. This is what separates Assault Cube from the rest – it is a completely open source project which means anyone can take a look inside of it providing they have the relevant knowledge to do so. They can add new levels, new weapons, add new enemies, anything they want to. Another thing that is surprising is that this game is also completely free to use, so now you don’t need to go out and spend $50 on a console game. You can just install this and enjoy the same benefits but without any cost at all.
In 2007, the game had to be renamed due to a copyright claim by another website, which meant it had to be changed to what we all know it as today. You could say that this actually helped progress – people thought it was generally a better name and it also gave press attention to the project. More and more people started to find out about it and got given the chance to play it, reviews started coming in that were all very positive. Users loved the game. Now there are over 60 different servers online at all times to make sure gamers can play it with many other players at any time they wish, sometimes tournaments are even set up to add even more fun to it. This is something that you don’t want to miss.
