Introduction

Audacity

Audacity was originally created back in 2000 by two university students who saw the masses of applications built for audio editing but noticed that there weren’t any free alternatives available. This was a huge problem for anyone who wanted to get involved in audio but didn’t have a lot of start-up capital to invest in software. At that time, it was only large businesses who could use these types of packages, leaving small unsigned artists with the inability to properly edit their tracks. This really was the first of its kind.

As you might expect, the popularity of it grew rather quickly as people began to get the opportunity to use powerful tools such as this. In just a few short months, it had already started to receive tens of thousands of downloads. The  two guys kept developing it and releasing updates to keep up with the moving industry but due to university commitments obviously couldn’t complete the entire project by themselves. It was at this stage when they decided that they needed the help of others and decided to make it a community project by releasing the source code. This was a brave and risky thing to do as it meant competitors could take a look at how it worked but it ended up being a success. Now there are thousands of keen developers who are working on it everyday to make it the best they possible can.

The founders of Audacity are still involved in the project, although one of them now works at the internet search engine giant Google and therefore this has become a side-project for him. However, even despite this the project continues to grow at an alarming rate. In fact, it was announced in 2011 that it had received over 76 million downloads over its lifespan so far and this is increase every single day. This makes it one of the most popular open source projects of all time and this is something we should all be grateful for. Free software is something we should all embrace and enjoy, without it the cost of using our computers for both personal activities and business purposes would be significantly more expensive. The current stable version of is 2.0.0 which was released back in March 2012, which we recommend you take a look at.
