It provides many different functions to make transfers faster – you can of course obtain many different types of data too, you really aren’t limited by this piece of software. This has been very popular for many many years and continues to grow, so if you haven’t taken a look at it just yet we recommend that you go ahead and do so. You really are missing out.

Introduction

In 2000, a client called eDonkey2000 had been released to allow users to share files, it was developed by a US company and was there to help distribute copyrighted music and videos. However, it didn’t do a great job of this, the client was fairly slow and largely unusable, it didn’t gain a lot of popularity around the world and was mainly considered a failure. There was some potential in the network though, so it was decided by a man called Hendrik that he wanted to make his own version which would fix all of the problems people had detected and would do it all more efficiently. This is exactly what happened – in 2002, eMule was released which was much better and started getting a lot of positive attention. It was still fairly small and there wasn’t a great number of files available either, so they had to implement a system to help with this.

A credit system was put into place which meant that each user was assigned a number of credits. Whenever a file was downloaded the number of credits they had was reduced and when a new file was shared to a user, the number of credits was increased. This meant that the network grew significantly over a short period of time and it encouraged people to share much more. As you would expect, as the number of files grew, so did the popularity of the software. This led to very positive growth and over the span of a few years, millions of users started to join and share it with their friends too. It became one of the most recognizable tools to complete these tasks. In 2005, the original eDonkey network was shut down after legal threats but it didn’t even matter anymore because eMule had far surpassed it and was open source too. When people saw that the eDonkey network had shut down, they all decided to switch to this one instead which of course led to even more growth. There were many factors which led to the success that this tool saw, but one thing is for sure – it all comes down to the features it offers free of charge.

The fact that this was open source gave it an advantage over many competing products. This is because it became much more difficult for the Government and other legal organisations to stop it – the source code was everywhere, even if the official website was closed down it could still stay completely operational, not even the original developers could stop it now. Over the years, several attempts at stopping it were made but it didn’t make any difference at all. The Government’s focus was then changed to be on Internet Service Providers in an effort to stop it, some providers had to start blocking known P2P ports to make these pieces of software completely unfunctional. This didn’t work either, though, because an update was released which made it run on two random ports that were generated every time the software was opened. The development team definitely knows what they’re doing.
